Abdelbaset Buhmeida
Center of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research
KAU, Jeddah, SAUDI ARABIA
Dr. Buhmeida worked at University of Turku, Finland since 1997, when He started pursuing studies for his doctoral thesis in the research group of Prof. Yrjo Collan, at the Department of Pathology. The research of his PhD Thesis was focused on the use of fine needle biopsies from prostate cancer and on methods applying static computerized DNA Cytometry and Morphometry in prostate cancer diagnosis and prognostication. He successfully defended his thesis in 2002. During these studies, He became acquainted with the modern biomedical cancer research, and also gained experience as an active lecturer in the educational program carried out by our research group. Following the completion of his thesis, he continued cancer research as a post-doctoral fellow in a multi-disciplinary research team at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy, including senior researchers from the Department of Pathology and Department of Surgery. During this post-doctoral period, He was involved in guiding junior researchers pursuing studies for their thesis, and gave assistance of exchange students in their research projects. This fruitful period has resulted in a growing series of original publications continuing the research line adopted in his Thesis, applying these methods mainly in analysis of solid tumors. At the end of 2009, He has been appointed as a Docent in Experimental Oncology (Associate Professor) at the Medical Faculty, University of Turku, while He was joining the Centre of Excellence in Genomic Medicine Research (CEGMR), King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Once He indulged in the CEGMR, He worked hard for the development of CEGMR in the field of biomedical cancer research, which resulted in the publication of several scientific papers in international peer reviewed journals, to be then assigned as coordinator of the Biobank, the main core facility in any comprehensive genomic medicine research center. Additionally, He has been also in the task of chairing various service units at CEGMR such as the Immunohistochemistry Unit (IHCU) named later the Histopathology Unit (HPU), and the Bioimaging Unit (BIU). As a biobanker, He played a pivotal role in enhancement of biobank unit activity at CEGMR by bridging and strengthening the connection between Bionbank Unit and different surgeons and pathologists of collaborative hospitals in the region on daily bases. He has the ability to convince the healthcare providers to become part of establishing future biospeciemen and biorepository model in Saudi Kingdom to enhance the biomedical research. On 2014, He has been promoted by the Academic Council of KAU to the academic rank of Professor. Currently, He is deeply involved as a main coordinator in launching a biobank program for 5 years to be considered as the first initiative and working model towards the establishment of Saudi National Biobank in order to be the main supplier of high quality and fully annotated biospecimens for healthcare scientists to convert their hypothesis to a discovery. Moreover, He is focusing on the role of different histological, clinical and biological markers in the evaluation of prognosis of Saudi cancer patients and the relation of these markers with clinical features by applying advanced Omics platforms such as NGS, digital PCR and Microarray technologies. He is helping in building Decision Support Systems by validating cut-off points of potential bio-molecular markers to establish validated applicable Prognostic Models which might be applied as criteria for classifying Saudi cancer patients into good and poor prognostic groups. A particular aim is to promote future connections and cooperation among cancer institutions nationally and internationally. This can establish universally more applicable guidelines for helping individualized cancer treatment, and more efficient eradication and treatment of cancer.
